National Day Rally address "comprehensive"

SINGAPORE:

National Day Rally address "comprehensive" MPs have described Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's National Day Rally address as comprehensive.

They said Mr Lee not only touched on hot-button issues of May's General Election but also assured Singaporeans, especially those who need help most.

They welcomed Prime Minister Lee's move to make outpatient medical care more affordable and accessible for the elderly.

But some felt more can be done.

Dr Lam Pin Min, MP for Sengkang West, said: "I hope that the government can actually look at the subsidy framework for hospitalisation. Currently, many Singaporeans are concerned about whether their Medisave savings will be sufficient for their old age."

Prime Minister Lee also explained at length how not every request to the government can be fulfilled.

Mr Gerald Giam, an NCMP, said: "I don't think anyone of us are asking for a populist government. In fact a populist government will not serve Singaporeans well. But what we want is a government that will get the policies right."

The MPs also welcomed Mr Lee's "Singaporeans first" assurance.

Mr Vikram Nair, MP for Sembawang GRC, said: "There is a perception that foreigners here are taking (away) our jobs, university places and everything else. I mean, the reality is the relationship is a lot more complex, because the foreigners create opportunities as well, and those opportunities are sometimes harder to measure. But the overall result is that the economy grows."
